STOKE YOUR BRAIN POWER AT SOUTH COAST SENIOR COLLEGE
All for the joy and fun of learning!
No grades, no tests, no homework, no term papers. Instead, here’s a relaxed and worthwhile way to keep smartly up-to-speed about art, travel, history, books, writing, music and politics at this volunteer-driven “on-line” and “in-person” school — the South Coast Senior College of Maine.
Do you have an itch to learn more about Poetry or Canada or the History of the Kurds? Would you like to join an on-line book club with a savvy, well-read moderator? Are you fascinated by Broadway music or the history of Swing? Check out our catalog to see what’s waiting for you. (www.south-coast-senior-college.coursestorm.com)
Then sample our class selections! The Magical Mystery Tour of the British Isles presents who-done-its set in the Shetland Islands, Ireland and England. Mainely Books showcases literature set in Maine and/or written by Maine authors. Other popular classes feature Memoir Writing, Flower Arranging, Watercolor, Gravestone History and Songs of Summer.
“We look for teachers and topics that pique the interest of our audience,” says Sandi  Kaan, head of the South Coast Senior College. “Most of our students are retired and come from careers in business, teaching and medicine — but they still want to learn new things. Our volunteer teachers come from Ivy League colleges, noted prep schools and the corporate world. Some are passionate about their hobbies. Many are former educators who thrive on enriching lives and providing networking opportunities for like-minded ‘over-50’ seniors. This is not their first rodeo.”
Class cost is modest. Yearly membership is $25 and classes range from $10 - $27. Some workshops are free to members. Many classes are on Zoom (sweatpants and pajama attire encouraged). Other classes meet in person at Graves Library and York Region Chamber of Commerce.
We invite you to look at our curriculum. We know you will find a course (or two) that intrigues you. We are also open to discussing opportunities to teach, should you desire. Don’t hesitate to email or call with any questions, and we look forward to hearing from you.
