Visiting Artist Series: Native Arts with Barry Dana
Visiting Artists Series welcomes Former Penobscot Chief Barry Dana, an expert in Native arts, who will give a presentation about the arts of the Penobscot Nation and the rich heritage that informs them, discussing his own artwork and how it is inspired by the culture and traditions of his people.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: A graduate of the University of Maine, Dana was a teacher of the Penobscot language and culture at Indian Island Elementary School for fourteen years before heading out to teach and lead workshops throughout the state and New England. As past Chief of his people, Dana is not only an artistic representative but a knowledgeable cultural resource who is actively involved with preserving the music of his people. He was the producer of “Voices of Katahdin,” a CD of traditional Penobscot music by Keepers of the Penobscot Drum.
