Book Talk "An American Dialogue: Our Founders and Us"
Will Ethridge will present a book talk on Joseph Ellis?s ?American Dialogue: Our Founders and Us? with references to two other recently published books on American history, Doris Kearns Goodwin?s, ?Leadership in Turbulent Times? and Jill Lepore?s, ?These Truths.? Joseph Ellis is a highly respected historian who has authored a number of acclaimed books such as, Founding Brothers, which won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2001. In his recently published American Dialogue, Ellis examines enduring and divisive issues through the views of four founding fathers: Thomas Jefferson on slavery and race relations, John Adams on inequality, James Madison on the Constitution and original intent, and George Washington on America?s role in the world. Ellis?s goal in writing the book ?is to learn more about our origins in the fond hope that doing so will allow us to frame the salient questions of our time with greater wisdom.? The NY Times said that, ?in American Dialogue, Ellis draws connections between our history and our present reality with an authority few authors can match.? Jill Lepore in her acclaimed one-volume American history, These Truths, also provides valuable insight about what our history reveals regarding these issues, and Doris Kearns Goodwin looks at how Lincoln, the two Roosevelt?s, and Johnson also wrestled with many of the same issues during other turbulent times in American history. Will Ethridge is a resident of York and the former CEO of Pearson Education and the Chairman of the Association of American Publishers.
