World Ocean Day Celebration at the Seacoast Science Center
The Seacoast Science Center will celebrate World’s Ocean Day (WOD) on Sunday, June 11. An internationally recognized day to honor the world’s ocean and celebrate all it provides, the Center’s WOD celebration is a great opportunity for families to have an exciting shared learning experience focused on the important role the ocean plays in our everyday life.
The fun kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with games, face painting, and a meet and greet with the Seacoast Science Center’s mascots, Belmont the Harbor Seal and Larry the Lobster.
Kids of all ages, get in the World Ocean Day spirit and come in a marine-themed costume, decorate your little-one’s stroller, and join the decorated stroller parade at 11:00 a.m.
Throughout the day, you can learn about the marine mammals live in the Gulf of Maine though fun, hands-on activity stations. Learn all about our Marine Mammal Rescue Team’s work and take part in a mock seal rescue, feel the effects of a blubber glove, and discover how big different whales species of the Gulf of Maine get.
From 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. you can walk through the Blue Ocean Society’s life-size inflatable whale, Ladder, and learn about how baleen whales eat and digest their food from an inside view.
Guided squid dissection sessions, held at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., will teach all about the anatomy and physiology of squid. Space is limited and pre-registration is suggested; cost is $5 per person.
Do your part to help save our ocean by joining the Blue Ocean Society for a beach clean-up at 1:30 p.m. You’ll learn how trash on our shore becomes marine debris and about the dangers it poses to sea creatures and ocean health.
